This is Holy Week: A Poem for Justice

They say this week will be our generation’s Pearl Harbor

Sirens no longer peak at night; the darkness has made way into the light

Gloves of every coloration line the streets

Charts depict who’s winning in death this week

Cries of ‘how long’ moan toward ‘how many more’

This is Holy Week

Who will roll away the stone for God’s sake?

God’s most vulnerable sleep in painted boxes; 6 feet

Graves line islands where prisoners bury the dead, 6 feet deep

The margins are crying; the mighty are hiding

Empire offers ticker tape parades to cameras watching;

while salvation comes from those without PPE

This is Holy Week

Christ have mercy for they

know exactly what they do

Who will roll away the stone for God’s sake?

Hosanna we cry out for justice

Hosanna we cry for PPE

for universal health care

for racial inequity to cease

for life to come again anew

This is Holy Week
